Online Casinos = Child Pornography?
Leave it to an Alabama Congressman to say that gambling at online casinos is
like child pornography. Congressman Spencer Bachus says that America’s newest
addiction is the online casino. The Republican congressman has made it his
objective to protect young people from the pressures of online casinos. Okay,
lets add that to the list of things we need to educate our youth about behind
sex, drugs and alcohol. Bachus has long been a brutal critic of the internet
gambling industry and has gone as far as to campaign himself as anti-gambling.
The congressman opposed the Payments Systems Protection Act which went all the
way up the ladder only to be denied. The Act was proposed by Republican Ron Paul
and Democrat Barney Frank and was meant to loosen regulations and make it easier
for banks/financial institutions to transfer money from online casinos. Not
taking into account that making online casino and online gambling legal in the
United States would create a lot of money for the government from taxation. Not
to mention, that it would also be government regulated.
The study in which Bachus received his information from was from a Canadian
academic who later chastised the congressman for misinterpreting the findings.
Congressman Bachus said that “American public should not be partnering with
child pornography sites and indirectly with online casinos.” The reference seems
so far fetched. How could he compare something so despicable as child
pornography with online casinos?
It seems that the congressman stands by his words. His argument being that the
secretive and addictive nature of pornography and internet gambling that can be
accessed twenty four hours a day is dangerous and should be kept away from the
American public.
