Guilty Plea Withdrawn: 1
There was a very interesting move recently made in the legal realm of the online
casino world. David Caruthers, the former Chief Executive Officer of the online
casino and internet gambling site, BetOnSports recently decided to withdraw his
guilty plea. This announcement came just days before he was set to be sentenced
from charges of online casino sports betting in the United States. The former
online casino mogul seemingly out of the blue decided to reject the plea bargain
that was presented to him by the US authorities. Carruthers changed his plea to
not guilty according to the latest reports. Carruthers has been held under house
arrest since 2006 agreed earlier this year to accept the terms in the plea
bargain. The plea bargain meant that if he plead guilty he would be given three
years in prison instead of the huge number that he would face if he plead not
guilty.
Carruthers was charged with operating an illegal online casino and internet
gambling site while also accepting players from the United States. The former
online casino mogul was arrested when he was in Dallas flying from the United
Kingdom to Costa Rica. It was then that he was charged with illegally accepting
bets and wagers from players from the United States. Online casinos have been
going through investigations like this since the United States government passed
the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. Regardless, the former CEO of
BetOnSports was arrested while he was on board his flight to Costa Rica. One can
only imagine how unpleasant that flight must have been for the other passengers.
