2007Online Poker Tournament Brings Together Poker Magazine
Readers
Sounds like there's lots of hype surrounding PaddyPower's
upcoming Battle of the Mags finale. Scheduled for November 8th at
Wapping Studios in South East London, Battle of the Mags is an
inaugural tournament bringing together subscribers of the top poker
magazines out there. I know, when you put it like that it sounds
pretty cheesy doesn't it? I'm sure its just a promotional event for
select magazines and Paddy Power anyways. I hate to sound bitter,
but from what I could tell, the prize package is for only £14,000,
which in the world of poker these days, is chump change - especially
for a televised event.
But that's what they're doing. Televising the final table at 8 pm
on Friday, December 14 on Sky TV Channel 843. Apparently, they've
already got the eight final players picked out, conveniently
representing the eight most popular poker magazines in circulation
today. Is it just because I'm jealous that I really don't find
anything great about this? I'm sure the players who are in the mix
feel good. But why should I be complaining, right? I don't know.
That's a good question. I think I need to hit a big win on the slot
machines, or win the lottery. Okay, once again, I feel better.
Anyways, Battle of the Mags should be fun to watch just for the
mix of players alone. They are are no-names as far as I can tell,
and come from all over Europe, including Poland, Germany, Romania,
Ireland, Denmark and UK. That's a pretty eclectic mix, so it should
be fun to see the players interact and compete with one another. I
just hope it doesn't get too serious. I can't bear to sit and watch
a poker table in which nobody cracks a smile or has a good time.
It's different when your in it. I guess its like watching/playing
golf for some people. Or any sport for that matter.
I should mention that I just realized the winner of Battle of the
Mags will also win two free seats to European Poker Tour circuit
event of their choosing and a free seat to the Irish Open, which has
€3 million guaranteed jackpot. Okay, I guess that sweetens up the
pot considerably. Or is it that the free seat entry is all that is
awarded? I don't know. Somebody should have been more clear in their
press release. Anyhow, Paddy Poker has been throwing online freeroll
satellite tournaments (exclusive to each magazine) over this summer,
all culminating toward the current table lineup. It's all wrapped up
now, but I wouldn't be surprised if PaddyPower comes up with
something else very soon.
