2007Online Sportsbook, Bwin, Ventures onto Land for the
First Time in Spain
Betbull - what a perfect name for a betting company doing
business in Spain. I personally have not been to Spain, but can
honestly say that one of the foremost images that pops into my mind
when I do think of Spain is the running of the bulls. Or bulls in
general. You know, matadors and red capes - the whole nine yards. I
also think of fresh seafood, but then again, maybe I'm thinking of
Portugal. Spain's great. Let's leave it at that.
Anyways, the reason I mention Betbull is that I just read
an article they are teaming up with Bwin. If you're not familiar
with Bwin, allow me to familiarize you - Bwin is sportsbook. As some
people have mistakenly thought in the past, they are not an online
betting exchange. That's Betfair, and no, I don't think Bwin and
Betfair sound anything alike. What's the deal?
As opposed to online casino gambling or bookie betting for that
matter, online betting exchanges are a form of wagering that allows
people to post their own odds on betting events (usually sports),
which can then be challenged by other bettors. Since there are no
bets actually being made with the bookie, per say, it is technically
classified as a betting exchange. This was the same setup as
Betcha.com, which if you remember correctly, was recently shut down
by the Washington State Gambling Commission and hunted down by good
'ol Louisiana boys.
Bwin, however, is not an online betting exchange (I feel better
getting that off of my chest, thank you). Now that we have cleared
that important matter up, why is Bwin and Betbull's partnership
newsworthy you ask? I really don't know to tell you the truth,
except that this is Bwin's inaugural entry into land-based betting.
They have hitherto entirely focused entirely on online betting, so I
guess it should be interesting to see how they fare in Spain, which
you may know has recently been liberalized on the gambling front.
Other bookies like Will Hill and Ladbrokes have already announced
plans to hit up Spain, so it should be a grand fun-for-all. Good
luck Bwin!
(Sometimes I wonder where I am going with this blog. I suppose
it's just good to write. Hey, if it keeps me from gambling all the
day long, that must be a good thing, right? Not that I would gamble
all the day long anyway, but you never know....)
