European Parliament Debates Internet Safety: 1
The latest development from the European Parliament is their attempts at
protecting the average internet user. There have been measures taken to develop
a system to more effectively protect the data that people who use the internet
exchange. The man heading up that effort is Stavros Lambrinidis who is a Greek
MEP. The protection of the internet user has been an ongoing debate since the
internet was invented. The online casino industry is one of the many that is
deeply affected by the online user security issue. There seems to be a debate
going on that may distract from the issue at hand. Some believe that personal
information needs to stay secure and those people fear that if someone is
monitoring the exchange of information that it will turn our society into a Big
Brother society.
Lambinidis has made it very clear that he thinks that internet companies like
online casinos and governments have a lot more power than the people who use the
internet. The purpose of having this debate out in a public forum may be
beneficial to more than one would think. The youth is becoming increasingly
accustomed to technology and the internet being a part of their everyday lives.
The way to avoid having problems with youth using the internet for illegal
purposes like visiting an online casino is to educate them about the dangers of
sharing personal data on the internet. The European Data Protection Supervisor,
Peter Hustinx wants to take it into his personal mission to warn youth about how
dangerous sharing information on the internet is.
