New Cyber Café Raid
The Authorities in Jakarta recently busted four people for gambling at an online
casino at a cyber café. The Jakarta Post reported that their local police had
been planning the raid for some time now, after careful surveillance. The
internet café has been accused of providing access to online casinos and even
considering themselves a facility for online gambling. The four people arrested
for allegedly participating in illegal online casino activity are: Tony Thamrin,
Sri Nauli Yuniar Pohan, Kristiano and Mohamad Saleh. The police raided the cyber
café and immediately confiscated two of the personal computers in the building.
Along with the personal computer seized in the online casino raid were a flash
disk and Rp 500,000, which is about US $454. The raid took place in late
December.
The suspects who were arrested in this case, if convicted, could face up to five
years in prison. They are currently on the hunt for the mastermind behind this
illegal online casino ring. The man behind these illegal online casinos and
cyber cafes is Tjoeng Fo Seng. He was not arrested this time but is still being
pursued by the local detectives. The four men who were arrested in this raid
were given subsequent statements by the police officers who arrested them. They
were told that they are facing serious equipment and manpower problems. The
detectives will continue to pursue the players and operators of the illegal
online casino ring. The authorities did manage to reveal that they are having
trouble tracing the gamblers who used the internet gambling sites for sports
gambling and betting.
Officers released the following statement regarding the online casino
investigation: "We have no special room for surfing to trace the user names and
passwords of the gamblers. The passwords change often. So we haven't been able
to track them."
