Anti Gambling Activist Suggest Smart Card
The Australians are at it again with a grand new idea on how they can curb the
problem gambling in their country. The newest idea is that a new smart-card
would be introduced to the online casinos and land based casinos in Australia.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported the newest suggestion from the
anti-gambling activists. The plan that has been suggested by the group would
give users the option to nominate an amount which would be their monthly cap to
how much they are willing to lose in the online casino or land based casino of
their choice. The leader of the anti gambling group has an agenda in which he is
completely candid about.
Tim Costello who is an activist against online casino gambling says that they
have a specific target in mind when they came up with the smart card system. He
claims that fifty cents of every dollar that is bet in an online casino or a
land based casino is that of an addict. So they will be targeting the socially
isolated people who are most likely to spend their time at online casinos, such
as bored women or stay at home parents in the suburbs. He did not provide a
source for any of the suggestions he made through out the statements in their
interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. He also added to his
interview that other countries, such as Canada and many other European countries
who have applied a similar system have seen very high success rates in the
reduction of problem gambling.
As an avid anti online casino gambling activist he is certainly well read on the
topic. Costello said: "We certainly know that in the outer suburbs where there
are few community centres, public transport is harder to get into the city and
to other events, that a social recreational need can often become a quite
devastating gambling addiction." He also added, "[It] overcomes the biggest
problem, which is saying I'm only one win away from not having a problem, I'll
keep chasing my losses." They will have to get their suggestions passed through
the Australian government before anything of this nature can be set in stone.
Online casinos will continue to be a heavily debated topic in the internet, but
particularly in Australia.
