Former Beauty Queen Wants Half
The South Florida newspaper, The Miami Herald recently reported that a former
beauty queen wanted to claim half of her husband’s lottery winnings. Her husband
did not win his prize at an online casino, but through the Florida Lottery. The
total winnings of the former beauty queen’s husband totaled to $600,000, which
is bigger than most people win at online casinos. Jennifer Bailey, the Dade
Circuit Court Judge, suggested that divorce court would be the best place for
these two to settle their disputes. The former beauty queen is none other than,
Donna Campbell, who is 48 years old and is currently still married to her
husband Arnim Ramdass, who is 52 years old.
Campbell’s intention was to divorce her husband once she learned of his
winnings, which he tried to conceal from her. Ramdass won his portion of the
lottery from a shared pot at work and his pre-tax earnings totaled $600,000. Her
currently estranged husband went through a lot of trouble to hide the fact that
he had won over half of a million dollars. He turned off their televisions and
disconnected their phones. One day while surfing the internet, Campbell Googled
her husbands name and learned that he had won the prize in June of 2007. There
is no law that says that a spouse has to share online casino or lottery
winnings. The former skin-cream model was also a runner up at the Miss Trinidad
and Tobago pageant in 1979, she says that her intentions are to set everything
in order regarding the division of assets before filing for divorce from her
husband. Judge Bailey said of the case: ''She has no identifiable legal rights.
Where does the law say you automatically have a right to participate in the
proceeds?''
