Colorado Court Declares Poker a Skill: 1
Online casino players everywhere may not agree on much, but it may be reasonable
to think that players understand that there is more skill needed to play poker
than a game like video slots or roulette. This is certainly something that poker
players at online casinos everywhere would vouch for. The reason for this
article is because this is a point that a Colorado man was trying to prove in
his case when he was charged for professional gambling. The Colorado jury found
him not guilty on the charges that were pressed against him due to the fact that
there was not substantial evidence provided to the jury that poker is not a game
of skill. The victory in this case does set a precedent in the state of Colorado
where players may be able to fight legislation and prove that poker is indeed a
game of skill and not a game of chance.
The legislation currently says that poker, specifically at online casinos, is
considered gambling. Just because he won this case does not mean that online
casino play is no longer frowned upon and that gambling is okay with the
authorities. Poker players will have to group their points and fight for what
they believe in. The man that was charged of professional poker by the state had
a testimony given by a professor of statistics from the Universtiy of Denver,
Robert Hannum. He was brought on to his defense because he has authored several
books on the topic, one in particular, “Practical Casino Math”. He has also
conducted many experiments under this subject matter and he has been able to
substantiate his theories.
