Canada Contemplates Regulation
In Canada there has not been a huge blanket decision that regards internet
gambling and online casinos like its neighbor to the South, the United States.
The United States reached a decision in 2006 which made transactions directly to
websites that were registered as an online casino illegal. The Unlawful Internet
Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 has not made online casino gambling in the
United States disappear; it has merely just made it move underground. People
will find a way to do something if they really want to do it, online casino play
is no exception. The report that was recently released which quoted the
professor from York University, Thomas Klassen, may have people look at the
fundamental principles of internet gambling differently.
Klassen has stated that it is imperative that online casino legislation be at
the forefront of online gaming discussions due to how fast it is growing in
Canada. Klassen has studied the online casino industry and has even authored
many papers regarding the subject. One of the more recent papers that Mr.
Klassen co-edited, Casino State: Legalized Gambling in Canada, does not say much
about the lottery system that currently exists in Canada. He has been quoted for
saying that he believes that the corner stores which typically sell the lottery
tickets have become ‘tax collectors’ for the Canadian government. The online
casinos in Canada do not provide as much revenue as the lottery currently does.
It will be up to the Canadian people to decide how online gambling gets
regulated in their country and there will surely be a study conducted by the
Canadian government to chronicle the process.
