Betcha.com Ruled to be Illegal Gambling: 2
Its not like Jenkins was running an online casino that he was cheating millions
of people out of money. He is not very likely going to return to the same line
of work, "This could really be a big business; it could be a really big deal,"
he said. "But it makes it tough when the government is standing on your neck."
Even though the website run by Jenkins is not like all of the other online
casinos out there where if you lose you definitely have to pay up, the
government maintains its position. The Attorney General of Washington is
standing his ground firmly by believing that most players are betting on this
website in hopes of winning money and therefore it is still considered illegal.
The owner of the alleged online casino Jenkins has a law degree and researched
the topic back and forth before embarking on his website. He was sure that the
way he was running his business was perfectly legal. The website that Jenkins
started, Betcha.com, ran on the principle of the honor system. Betcha.com was
somewhere that players were not necessarily obligated to pay up their losses, at
least not because they had to pay, but because they should pay. Jenkins said
that the reason why he started up his online businesses was because the internet
seemed to be like an unlimited frontier. In the United States the laws are
tricky regarding businesses that resemble online casinos.
This ruling will set a precedent for other online casino like businesses on the
internet. The Judge C.C. Bridgewater from the Court of Appeals Division II did
make his ruling clear that when there is something at risk it is still
considered gambling. Until the United States decides to change its rules and
regulations on the likes of online casinos businesses like this that seem
relatively harmless will not be able to continue operating. It is not very often
that we hear of an internet gambling website that does exceedingly well in the
United States, but we hope that Jenkins finds another way to prosper in
business.
