Obama Tribute in Antigua: 1
The island of Antigua has recently made a big announcement that they have
renamed the tallest mountain on the island Mount Obama. The renaming of the
mountain is supposed to honor the President of the United States, President
Barack Obama. The residents of the island hope that the name change of the
islands tallest peak will mean that the United States policies regarding the
online casino industry and Antigua will change in the near future. Sure, naming
a mountain after a president does not guarantee anything, but maybe it is a
symbol that they feel good thing are about to come their way. Antigua officially
renamed the mountain after the President of the United States even though the
online casinos and internet gambling sites which they want to legalize
desperately have not been legalized yet. This move can only be seen as very
smart, or very presumptuous.
The online casino operators in Antigua hope that this will help make the
relationship with the Untied States better in the regards of free trade. If this
is what it takes to get the President of the United States to pay attention to
the string of islands and it starts the conversation about free trade and online
casinos or internet gambling, then the tactic was successful. Mount Obama is in
the Caribbean Sea and it reaches 1300 feet and was previously known as Boggy
Peak. To add to the significance of the mountain’s name, the island’s Prime
Minister Baldwin Spencer re-christened the mountain to honor President Barack
Obama on his birthday this year. The newly named Mount Obama has a plaque set at
the foot of the mountain which reads, "Mount Obama, named in honor of the
historical election on Nov. 4, 2008, of Barack Hussein Obama, the first black
president of the United States of America, as a symbol of excellence, triumph,
hope and dignity for all people."
