Bangkok Online Lottery Almost Approved: 2
It seems like the coast is clear for the online lottery system in Thailand. All
of the legal issues seem to have been ironed out and all of the rulings were
forwarded to the Government Lottery Office last week in order for them to make
the final decisions on the online lottery system. Now that all of the legalities
are taken care of the coast is clear for the first form of internet gambling,
the online lottery. The only hurdle that this issue will hold is what the study
that is being conducted by the Thammasat University says about their online
program. There are not as many taboos against online lottery as there are about
online casinos and internet gambling, but some may think that it is the gateway
to the online casino industry. The person who has been commissioned to oversee
the survey on the online lottery is Nakharin Mektrairat who is the dean of the
faculty of political science at the University.
The survey will be using the opinions of about 10,000 people across the country
in order to achieve results that are representative of the entire population.
All of the survey results are expected to be in by the end of the month of
August. If the survey results turn out to be negative then the online lottery
project may be reviewed again and possibly cancelled. The online casino industry
would not want to see that happen as this is sort of the first taste of online
casino play that the country would see. The Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva
said that they would need more details from the survey before the online lottery
can be fully approved and put into action. The finance department permanent
secretary said, "Personally, I neither oppose nor support the scheme. But if the
public does not want it, I think we should study the contract and find out the
consequences if it needs to be terminated."
