Gary Kaplan’s Legal Woes Continue: 2
The former online casino owner does not seem to be very popular over at the St.
Charles country jail. The jail only has two rooms in which inmates can meet with
their legal team to discuss their cases. According to published reports,
Kaplan’s legal team has day-long visits. This would not only make for one hefty
legal bill, but also has all of the other inmates up in a tiffy. Online casinos
make a lot of revenue, so the legal bill should be no trouble that is if he is
acquitted of the charges.
The lawyers of the more than 120 defendants that need to meet in one of those
two rooms are not taking this lying down. The former online casino owner,
Kaplan, and his legal team seem anything but fazed by these allegations. They
maintain that the work that they need to get done in regards to winning his case
is vital that they have use of the room. However one of the six public defenders
that works at the St. Charles County office says, “His [Kaplan's] rights
shouldn't be any more important than my clients' rights. Inevitably, the less I
see my clients, the less chance I'm going to have to make a good connection with
them," "It's hard for them to trust me when they hardly see me."
This is something that seems to happen with high profile clients all over the
world, not just online casino owners. The world of online casinos has been
turned upside down sometimes because of scandals that are brought to the
mainstream media because of guys like Kaplan and their alleged greediness. What
is unfortunate about this case is the fact that the St. Charles County jail does
not have a system in place to give equal time to every inmate with their legal
team. On the other hand, maybe Kaplan and his team are just more aggressive
and/or resourceful when it comes to getting what they need.
