UIGEA in the Courtrooms Again:2
The United States Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act has not necessarily
been the most popular bill passed in the history of the country, to say the
least. The people of iMEGA are pulling out all the stops when it comes to trying
to overturn an Act that they consider to be unconstitutional. They also made
claims to the United States Government that the UIGEA is vague, to which the
government quickly replied with a counter argument citing that it is indeed very
clear. The US Department of justice was criticized immediately after releasing
statements which said that the Act was perfectly clear about online casinos.
However the Act does not clearly define what an “illegal online gambling
transaction” is at an online casino.
I know what you are thinking… the people that are criticizing the government
must be online casino insiders. Normally that is the case, however this time it
is also federal government officials, US financial organizations and
institutions and even some politicians. The government does not think that the
people at iMEGA have enough “legal standing” to win their claims in a Federal
courtroom. One of the claims made by iMEGA was dismissed because they did not
bring it up during their original arguments. Their claim was that the UIGEA
“violates privacy rights of individuals”. Which may or may not have been a
legitimate claim favor of online casinos, but due to the legalities it was
dismissed.
The chairman of iMEGA, Joe Brennan is confident that they will win their case
against this highly unpopular law and be able to establish reasonable
regulations for online casinos in the United States. They will also bring up the
topic that online sports’ betting is legal in the US, yet playing at an online
casino is not. Whatever happens in the end, everyone will be more clear on the
US laws against internet gambling.
