Malaysian Authorities Raid Cyber Cafe
The police in Malaysia’s Pahang have been very busy trying to keep illegal
online casino activity out of their jurisdiction. There was a recent arrest in
the capital of Pahang, Kuantan, that involved a pretty large raid into a
cyber-café. The reason for the raid is because the police officers had been
doing an investigation on this particular café and had evidence that the café
was providing their customers access to illegal online casinos. The number of
people arrested at the site was a total of fourteen people, two of which were
employees and the rest were customers. During the online casino raid there was a
wide range of people that were arrested that day. The people that were arrested
in the online casino debacle’s age ranges from 20 all the way to 50.
The people of interest that were arrested were under custody by 10:30 am. The
spokesman for the Kuantan police department, Asst Comm Mohd Jasmani Yusoff told
reporters that along with the arrests that the authorities were able to seize
all of the computers in the building as well as recover some cash from the
alleged illegal online casino operation. This raid in particular lead to the
arrest of 17 other sustpects that were not in the cyber café at the time of the
raid. That officer also added that there have been many similar cases in
Malaysia over the past months, on in particular in which the police were able to
arrest 55 people and seize 38 computers. Operating illegal online casinos are
the main reason why the raids are happening, but those are not the only charges
that are being brought to the suspects of these cases.
The main charge was, “All the premises owners will be investigated under Section
4(1)(b) of Common Gaming House Act 1953,” which was confirmed by Yusoff. In
total, the Malaysian police is responsible for the arrests of 86 people and the
seizure of 62 computers all tied to illegal online casino activity. The
estimated net worth of all of the information and computers seized is RM
186,000.
