UIGEA Gets Ugly: 2
The political publication, Politico, has been in the news recently for its hard
hitting stories against the US Government, particularly for their decisions
regarding online casinos. What the most recent article basically says is that
due to a 1996 Act instated by the Clinton administration, any decisions made by
the Bush administration in the last six months of his term are up in the air and
may be reversed due to the all Democratic ruled White House. The online casino
industry is crossing their fingers that this will be a great change that the
country will make towards legalizing online gambling in the United States again.
This is not all just hearsay, the author of the article spoke to Democratic
Senator Barbara Boxer who is an aide to the Senate Environment and Public Works
Committee. She is very familiar with the CRA and told Politico that the
Committee will definitely consider that as a possibility when they are reviewing
the most recently submitted regulations. She’s not the only one who is looking
at the Act. Democrat Ed Markey who is Chairman of the House Global Warming
Committee has said that the CRA is a great tool to expedite the process of
removing bad rules out of out law books. The Bush administration used CRA to
overturn a few Clinton Administration rules one in particular that made
ergonomic workspaces a requirement. The precedent that these rules have made can
only make things better for the online casino industry.
The White House, of course, claims that they are not rushing anything through,
they are simply doing their jobs until the end of the term. Online casinos will
surely be petitioning to get the UIGEA regulations overturned by the Obama
Administration. The US Treasury recently made it the responsibility of the US
financial institutions to deny illegal online casino activity.
