Aussies Speak Up Against Gambling
The Australian Newspaper, The Age, has recently reported that there are many
people who oppose the decision to liberate the online casino advertising market
in Victoria. Despite the success of Betfair, the people who oppose online
gambling are still speaking up about how they feel and are prepared to fight the
spread of internet gambling in their communities. Victoria is known as the most
densely populated area in all of Australia. Because of that, they are able to
offer their own licenses, such as online casino regulation licenses. The betting
exchange regulations when it comes to gambling are similar to the regulations
set by the state of Tasmania. Victoria will likely attract many new license
holders because of its new regulations such as intralot, Tatts Group, Tabcorp,
and Betfair.
The online casinos that have been around the longest in Australia belong to
Betfair. The issues that people have with the Betfair site is that anyone can
bet on a horse to lose in a race. This has caused quite a stir in the horse
racing community because it has been speculated that some races may be fixed in
order to win big online. The Western Australian state government lost its case
against the Betfair online casino in a High Court Case. The Western Australian
state government was trying to block the gambling regulations from their state
but were unsuccessful, therefore every other Aussie state had to abide by the
regulations that were put into place.
The company did sign a deal with the Australian government to have a three year
transparency deal in order to avoid any fixed races or corruption that is
usually affiliated with online casinos. The online casino Gaming Minister, Tony
Robinson said of the issue, "The Government believes that betting exchanges,
like totalisers and bookmakers, should be able to advertise, provided the
advertisements conform to the Government's responsible gambling principles."
