Sixty Minutes Expose, Not So Harsh: 6
Unfortunately the Sixty Minutes expose could not get the cooperation of all of
the parties involved in the online casino cheating scandals. Joe Norton and the
Kahnawake Gaming Commission would not participate in the program and refused to
be interviewed but they did release a statement to the show. They told the
producers of the shoe that they are victims of this whole thing because they
were taken advantage of by former employees and fellow insiders of the company.
They also added that the security measures were simply problems with the
software at both online casinos. The investigation had only one person that was
wiling to clear any smoke in the air. Frank Cantina who was formerly the
director of the Gaming Enforcement Division in New Jersey was hired to
investigate the cheating scandal by the tribe.
Cantina gives most of the credit to the players at the online casinos for
figuring out that there was something wrong and taking action. Apparently the
scheming behind the online casino, Ultimate Bet, had been going on for four
years! The person who was behind the whole operation was a former world of poker
champion. When Cantina was asked if any of the names of the cheaters had been
released, he responded by saying, “Well, the one name has already been released
by the Kahnawake Gaming Commission. That's a fellow by the name of Russ
Hamilton." Hamilton was responsible for winning several titles in poker. At the
World Series of Poker, he won $1 million and his weight in silver in 1994.
Hamilton still has some co-conspirators that are yet to be named in this online
casino scandal. In total they used multiple fake accounts to steal more than $20
million from unsuspecting players at the online casinos. At the conclusion of
the Sixty Minutes expose, host Steve Kroft said, "Because of jurisdictional
issues, no criminal charges have been filed, and no one even seems to be
conducting a criminal investigation. In this case, you have somebody who you
know was cheating. It's like the person's gotten away with it.”
